Global Day of Parents: A Moment to Pause, Reflect and Plan

June 1st marks Global Day of Parents - a time to celebrate the vital role parents play in supporting families and raising the next generation. It’s also a great opportunity to think about the future and how your estate planning reflects your family life.

Whether you’re raising young children, supporting adult children, or helping with your grandchildren, it’s important to ensure your plans are in place.

For Parents with Young Children

When you’re in the thick of family life, Wills and legal documents often fall to the bottom of the to-do list. But setting aside a little time to plan can make all the difference.

  • Have you made a Will?
A Will lets you name guardians for your children and ensure your assets are passed on according to your wishes. For more information, please see this blog.

  • Have you named legal guardians?
In your Will, you can choose who would care for your children if something happened to you.

  • Do your loved ones know your wishes?
A Will helps avoid confusion or conflict during an already difficult time.

  • Have you made a Power of Attorney?
Illness or accidents can happen at any age. Having someone you trust legally able to step in makes things far easier for your family. They aren’t just for the elderly.

For Grandparents Supporting the Next Generation

Many people in their late 50s and 60s find themselves in a unique position -  still working, supporting grown-up children, and helping to care for grandchildren.

You might not consider yourself "old enough" to be thinking about Wills and estate planning, but now is exactly the right time to put solid plans in place.

  • Is your Will up to date?
As your family grows and changes, your Will should reflect the people you want to provide for  -  including grandchildren. If it’s been a while, this blog might be worth a read.

  • Do you want to leave a gift to your grandchildren?
A Will can ensure they're looked after in a way that’s tax-efficient and age-appropriate, often through trusts.

  • Have you appointed Powers of Attorney?
These let trusted people act on your behalf if you're ever unable to  -  providing peace of mind for you and your family.

Estate planning isn’t just about assets - it’s about protecting the people you love most.
